The VMOC allows new concepts of operations supporting the standardization of spacecraft-to-ground interfaces needed to reduce costs, maximize space capabilities to the user, and allow the generation of new tactics, techniques, and procedures that lead to responsive space employment. A successful demonstration of the integrated system led the Operationally Responsive Space Office to select the VMOC as the planning, tasking, scheduling, and visualization tool for its 2015 Ground Systems Enterprise with a near term focus on supporting TacSat-4 and ORS-1 operations. Until this point, the VMOC had been developed with a broad user base and requirements set in mind, but TacSat-4 and ORS-1 operations made it clear that the VMOC approach to theater tasking would become a forcing function for a consolidated concept of operations.
The VMOC leverages commercial off-the-shelf hardware and software, Internet protocols (TCP/IP), and world-wide web technology to provide ubiquitous access to remote assets. Anytime information or communications support is needed, anyone with a valid user account can log into the VMOC through a conventional web browser and submit a request. This request launches a series of events controlled by the user’s permissions and the mission rules established by the designated space authority.
